Jewelry is the most intimate of art forms because we wear it. So, why would you wear something that doesn’t empower you?
As humans, we naturally feel good when we look good, and look good when we feel good. If you agree, then you likely consider the way what you wear can hold you back in life or propel you towards your goals.
Staying focused to achieve our goals with today’s bombardment of information can be difficult, but it is possible to do so with style.
Whether it is a spur-of-the-moment or well-planned purchase, consider the following:
- Think about the thoughts and feelings of the person that created it. Where was it made? Is it handcrafted right here in the United States by someone that loves what they do, or stamped out in mass in a China factory with limited labor rights?
- What is the sentimental value you place on it? Does it symbolize something for you?
- What legacy are you leaving by buying this? What will this piece of jewelry mean a year from now? 100 years from now?
- Are the stones and metals ethically sourced? Connect with a jeweler that has the same standards you do and you can be sure to find that their trusted suppliers share the same high standards. Ask for 100% recycled silver, gold, or platinum. Ask if your jeweler knows who mines the stones they’re selling.
Next year, my dad, Rocky Hard of Rock Hard Designs, will have been in business for 40 years. His stories of adventure, love of history and archeology, and willingness to educate consumers are trumped by only one thing: the quality craftsmanship that rivals the greatest jewelry houses in the world. Right in Pensacola and Grayton Beach, masters are creating designs that will be future artifacts.
His passion for adventure travel, gemstones, and handmade jewelry has also shaped my life. I’m a gemologist, jeweler and gem-carver with an accounting degree. I hand-make jewelry for my business, The Heart Department based in Nashville, Tennessee. I write inspiring stories for each limited edition or one-of-a-kind jewel based on the characteristics of the design and stones. The jewelry then becomes an easy daily reminder of where to focus your attention.
My dad & I both produce treasures that you will feel great about wearing. All the precious metals we use are recycled and Certified Green. We work with family-owned mines to reduce exposure to the supply chain. For example, each diamond from S. Muller & Sons is so closely tracked from mine to market that the individual that mined the stone and the cutter of the stone are recorded.
Anything can be empowering depending on how we look at it. Just make sure your investment is doing for you what you want. Invest in your enjoyment and enjoy your investment.
My dad and I are coming together for an exclusive two day show the Friday and Saturday after Thansksgiving (Black Friday, November 23 & Small Business Saturday, November 24 from 10am to 4pm both days). We will be showing our work side by side, so if you’re in the area, come see us and shop for meaningful gifts in peace.
